Language of the Heart:  Building Social-Emotional and Academic Connections Through Vocabulary

This course is based on Brene Brown’s Atlas of the Heart (ISBN: 0399592555). You will need to purchase a copy of the book to participate. The book can be purchased through most booksellers using the ISBN number or the title.

On Brene Brown’s homepage for the book Atlas of the Heart she quotes Ludwig Wittgenstein, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.”  This course will teach participants how to expand their students’ language around emotion, which in turn will support their social emotional development and how they navigate their worlds.

This course focuses on social-emotional, academic development (SEAD) through vocabulary instruction of the 87 emotions presented in the book Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown.  Participants will engage in the book through the pedagogical lens of vocabulary instruction. They will learn a variety of strategies and ways to teach the language of emotion to their students, and these strategies can be leveraged to support additional vocabulary that applies to their coursework.

Learnsoft Incident 26837: Language of the Heart:  Building Social-Emotional and Academic Connections Through Vocabulary
Dates: June 9, 2025, through September 26, 2025 (Portfolio due September 12, 2025))

• This section is entirely online and begins on June 9, 2025.  The deadline to pay for this course is noon, June 8, 2025. Participants will be emailed instructions on how to access their online course.  If you have any questions regarding the course, don’t hesitate to contact the instructor directly.
• Once the course has been completed and the HIDOE has accepted all portfolios, the instructor will submit the required information to reimburse the course deposit for all participants.  There is no need to do anything to process this but to complete the course. It will take up to three months for the reimbursements to be sent based on the new course timelines with Learnsoft.
