Why HSTA believes in professional development

To ensure every student has the advantage of a qualified, caring educator, we must continuously improve how we recruit, train, support, and hold educators accountable. Professional development is the cornerstone of these improvements. Here’s why:
Education is not static. New technologies, research-based teaching strategies, and diverse learning needs demand that educators remain informed and adaptable. Professional development equips teachers with the tools to address these changes effectively.
No two students are alike, and understanding their unique needs requires ongoing growth in teaching practices. Continuous professional development helps educators refine their skills to provide tailored support that fosters individual student success.
The HSTA is dedicated to elevating what it means to be a quality educator. This includes attracting and retaining top talent and ensuring that every teacher has access to high-quality learning opportunities. Professional development helps educators deepen their expertise, build on their strengths, and grow into roles as inspiring leaders in their classrooms and beyond.
Professional development fosters a culture of collaboration, reflection, and excellence. It empowers educators to share best practices, learn from one another, and collectively enhance the teaching profession. This ensures that every student benefits from a cohesive, high-performing educational community.
HSTA’s vision of every student benefiting from qualified, committed educators is directly tied to our investment in professional development. By expanding learning opportunities for teachers, we create a ripple effect that enhances the quality of education across Hawaii’s public schools.
Professional development is not just about improving individual skills but about fulfilling our shared mission. By committing to lifelong learning, educators honor their role as transformative figures in students’ lives and contribute to building a future where every child in Hawaii thrives.
HSTA Online Courses (click on the course for course details)
Due to delays in developing the new PD platform, the HSTA PD Department is just beginning to add new courses. New courses will be posted here once approved. Should you see a message “no courses found” that means any courses for registration are full. Thank you for your patience.
Steps to Enroll in a Course:
1. Log in to the Learn Soft platform and click to enroll yourself. This will put you on the “enrollment approval list”
2. Return to the pd.hsta.org course page, enroll, and pay the deposit.
3. Once your deposit is received, you will be enrolled in the course within 24 hours (M-F)
Important:
If you are having difficulty with the Learning Soft platform you must submit Service Now ticket through the HIDOE, we can not help you with the platform.
**Most courses allow 30-45 participants. Learnsoft shows how many participants are enrolled. If the course is full, it will no longer be posted on our site.**
The Benefits of HSTA Professional Development
As an HSTA member, your course deposits are automatically reimbursed on any PD course you complete, excluding National Board courses. You will be asked to pay a $150 deposit when you sign up for a course. HSTA IPD reimburses this deposit as long as funds are available in our budget.
Reimbursement is automatic (while funds are available); nothing needs to be done by the member. Once the course has ended (based on the course end date, not the date portfolios are submitted) and your instructor provides the HSTA IPD Department with proof of completion, your deposit will be returned to you as a check. Reimbursements can take six to eight weeks to process after the close of a course. It may take longer if you take an incomplete and extend your time. Make sure your current mailing address through HSTA Membership is up to date so your refund is not delayed.
